There are a variety of reasons why you may need to see a foot specialist. The musculoskeletal system of the feet, ankles and lower legs involve many different parts that have to work together in unison to create smooth and pain-free movement. If any of these parts are not functioning correctly the whole system could suffer!

You are in luck! Our Chiropodists are highly trained and skilled in treating these conditions and issues. Whether it is slight discomfort or a daily pain we can help get you back to enjoying the lifestyle you want, pain-free.

These are just some of the conditions, treatments and services you will find offered at our Chiropody Clinic. Feel free to ask any of our team members if you have any questions.

Routine and Diabetic Footcare
Routine Footcare refers to regular nail cutting and foot maintenance for individuals who, for one reason or another, cannot or do not want to manage their own footcare.
Diabetic footcare refers to those individuals that have been diagnosed with pre-Diabetes or Diabetes who may or may not be on medication to treat the condition.
Diabetes is a chronic progressive condition that causes high glucose (sugar) levels. Diabetes also has a large affect on other systems in your body including your immune system, your nervous system and your circulatory system among others. These changes to your body systems can manifest in your feet.
It is important to remember that the feet are the furthest away from your brain and lungs therefore often issues arise here before other areas of the body. These can include peripheral neuropathy and reduced circulation. Both, in their own way, can lead to injury and even ulcers.
As a diabetic’s disease progresses with more severe complications it becomes even more important to have a Chiropodist as a member of your healthcare team. They can help ensure the health of your feet, your mobility (which is directly related to your overall health) and help you navigate any issues that may arise.
Callus and Corns
Many people consider callus normal, unfortunately it is not. Callus indicates pressure on that area of the foot that has triggered the production of skin to protect the area. Callus can have different causes but the most common are footwear and biomechanics (how the foot is functioning). Callus can be reduced by your Chiropodist in the office providing immediate relief. It is important to eliminate and treat callus because they are an indicator of a larger issue and can sometimes be hiding a much larger problem such as a hidden ulcer or early skin break down.

A corn otherwise known as a Heloma Durum, is an area of increased pressure. It can either be caused from something outside (shoes) or something inside (bony prominence). Corns can be removed by your Chiropodist generally with zero discomfort but immediate relief! Next we try and figure out why they are there and how fast they will come back. This information will help you and your Chiropodist come up with the best treatment plan for you.
Toe Nail Fungus
Toe nail fungus otherwise known as Onycomycosis is a common condition that can cause your toe nails to be thickened, discoloured (yellow, white or dark colours) deformed (changes the shape and direction they grow) and are hard to cut (often because nippers will not fit around them anymore).
Fungus is not easy to eliminate in the nails but in many cases it can be improved and eradicated.
This process is often multi-level with a combination of topical treatment (Jublia or Formula 3) and laser treatment (Lunula Laser) over the course of several month to even years.
Talk to your Chiropodist to see what treatment options are best suited for your fungal nails.
Wound Care
Wound care or the healing of an ulcer is a serious condition that needs to be evaluated, treated and followed by a team of medical professionals. Your Chiropodist will work with the medical doctors and community care nurses to offer you the best chance of recovery. Your Chiropodist is trained in wound debridement, dressing selection, off loading techniques and prescription of medication as required.
Healing and further preventing another wound is key to limb salvage in the long term.
Remember, we like to see wounds when they are small; do not wait until it is too late to save the toe, foot or leg!
Ingrown toenail management and surgical correction
Ingrown toenails, or onychocryptosis, are one of the most common foot problems our chiropodists treat. They can also be one of the most painful foot conditions. An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail is growing into the surrounding tissue, causing inflammation, redness, and swelling of the tissue. This painful condition can lead to infection if left untreated and cause further problems for the patient.
Potential causes of Ingrown Toenails may include:
Improper nail cutting
Tight fitting shoes or socks
Abnormal shape of the nail plate
Trauma to the nail plate or toe
Sport footwear
Pronation (the foot rolling in)
Preventing Ingrown Toenails

If an ingrown toenail develops, it’s necessary to have it treated as soon as possible by a chiropodist to avoid infection. If an infection occurs, it can easily spread to the bloodstream and cause severe problems for the patient. Other complications from an untreated ingrown toenail include the loss of the nail plate, deformity of the nail plate and tissue, scarring of the nail fold, and severe inflammation and pain around the nail bed. All of these complications can lead to difficulty wearing shoes and participating in normal activities.
The treatment of Ingrown toenails can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Regular nail care, such as trimming, is the easiest treatment. Nail spicule removal (piece of the nail that is ingrown) or, in more severe cases, a surgical procedure to permanently prevent regrowth, are also possible treatments. A chiropodist can help you determine which of these procedures are necessary and give you advice as to how to perform regular nail care at home.

Here at Kincardine Footcare and Orthotics, we can provide ingrown toenail management and perform removal procedures and consultations.
Wart treatment and removal
Warts are one of the most common foot conditions that we treat at *****. They are highly contagious, spread easily, and can appear on various parts of the body. They are caused by an infection of the Human Papilloma Virus. Warts have the ability to hide from your immune system, so they will not be resolved on their own and usually require treatment. Wart treatments vary, depending on the severity of the infection.
Warts are most common the bottom of the feet where it’s easiest to be exposed to the virus. They are typically a raised circular area and can occur anywhere on the skin. Often, they can be uncomfortable and even painful.
****** can perform a variety of wart treatments, including wart removal, to help you alleviate discomfort and help treat the infection!
Causes of Warts
Warts are caused by an infection by the Human Papilloma Virus. Breaks in the skin let the virus in, which is why they often appear on the bottom of the foot. This means activities like being barefoot in public places are a common cause of warts, for example, public pools, showers, and fitness centres. Some people are more susceptible than others, so it’s difficult to predict who is most at risk in different environments.
Preventing Warts
Preventing warts from spreading or preventing yourself from getting infected is very simple. Always wear footwear (like water shoes or flip flops) in public showers, pool decks, gyms, and any other place where people are barefoot. Make sure you only use clean tools on your feet and always sterilize any instruments that are used on feet in order to kill the virus.
If you have warts, these rules are essential to follow to prevent the spread of the virus. Furthermore, wearing waterproof bandaids over warts when going to public places will ensure that the virus doesn’t get transmitted to any surfaces. To prevent the spread of bacteria to other parts of the body, never pick at or scratch a wart.
Wart Treatment
There are a variety of wart treatments depending on the severity of the infection:
• Prescribed topical ointments for home use
• In-office topical medicaments
• Cryotherapy
• Laser treatment
• Surgical wart removal
If left untreated, warts can easily spread to other areas of your skin, like your face or hands. It’s also easy for the bacteria to spread to people who come in contact with the warts, like family members in your house. They can become painful and sometimes cause difficulty walking.
If you are suffering from warts, it’s important to have them treated or removed quickly to prevent the spread of the warts and pain or discomfort. ***** can provide treatment for your warts to help you control outbreaks and prevent the spread of the infection.
